Robert Bullock is a Sash & Bustle staple! His minimalistic yet traditional aesthetic paired with the amazing fit of his gowns makes for a perfect combination. His gowns truly make the bride shine on her wedding day and we love him for that! Not only are his designs great, he is too! Here is a little interview with Robert himself for you to enjoy! Keep note that the Robert Bullock trunk show is coming up June 8 – 17!
1) From where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
This is the question I get asked the most and while it probably seems like a very simple and easy question for most people to answer, it’s not so easy for me. My mind moves in different ways depending on each situation. My inspiration can come over a year, a month or in an instant. And it can come from anywhere. A vision, a dream or just the simple touch of a specific fabric can set my imagination on fire. Nature plays a big part in my creative process yet something completely opposite like entering an airport is like turning on a switch for me as well. Maybe it’s the energy of everyone either coming from or traveling to somewhere in the world but my creative mind feeds on it. I’m never one to freak when a flight is delayed. I’m content just to sit and watch. A recent example is:
I was at a stop light in Florida when I looked over at the red car next to me. The woman had these super long finger nails painted the most brilliant yellow with her hand out the window against the red. I was able to snap a quick picture which inspired a ready to wear photo shoot that I was the art director on for @rovvintage. As I said, it can come in an instant and then it just haunts me until I figure a way to execute it.
2) Do you design with a particular kind of bride in mind?
A real woman. I’ve always used women with curves to fit my gowns on. I want to reach the largest amount of brides possible. I want them to know they are the reality. For me to fit on a runway model would be ridiculous. Classic styles and a great fit is all anyone could ask for.
3) What is your favorite piece that you’ve created?
I often jokingly say, “the one that sells the most” but in all honesty it’s impossible. I have a difficult time enough staying in the moment because I’m always off to the next thing. So sometimes I look back at something I designed 30 years ago and I’m impressed with myself and other times I have to double check to see if it actually has my label in it. I crack myself up at times and try not to take myself too seriously.
4) What do you love the most about what you do?
That’s an easy one. I get to make people happy and make a living through my passion. Who could possibly ask for more?
5) What advice can you give to brides who are still searching for their dream dress?
Don’t let anyone tell you to keep searching for the perfect gown. It’s a set up. What if I said to you, “is he/she the perfect person? Perfect husband/wife-to-be?” At some point you are going to hit reality and realize he/she is human and this is life. When everyone is saying “the perfect gown” constantly, it sets the majority of brides up. Every gown they try on they are going to be thinking “is it perfect?” Instead of “Do I love this gown and does it make me happy to wear it?” Be careful, the gown is not so perfect if it outshines you. And have fun, for goodness sake, HAVE FUN!!!
