1) From where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

I love to travel and would be lying if I said the different places I’ve seen and people I meet don’t inspire + motivate me. I try to capture that in our collection look books by finding epic hidden spots in little corners of the world. I’ve always looked to other brands and businesses outside of bridal too; there are so many creatives doing cool things. I like to think of them all as my peers and we can learn so much from each other. Our team also makes a big effort to keep closely connected with our brides and stay super receptive to what they’re looking for, so that feedback definitely comes into play when designing new collections.

2) Do you design with a particular kind of woman in mind?

I like to think of our bride as cool, kind, and laid back. She’s pretty in a really effortless way and, while she’s not too outspoken, she’ll always have something witty ready in her back pocket. When it comes to her wedding, it’s all about the subtle, thoughtful details.

3) Winning “Designer of the Year” must have been pretty rewarding, how did you feel?

It was a huge honour to win Western Living Magazine’s Designer of the Year award for their Fashion category, and the coolest to see the Truvelle dresses printed within the magazine’s pages. It’s so easy to get lost in the day-to-day — the award was a perfectly timed reminder that what we’re doing is important for brides out there & also for Canadian fashion. I also loved meeting the other winners… there are so many talented designers out there!

4) How do you see Truvelle evolving?

Truvelle is forming a bit of a sisterhood with the launch of new lines. Designed with our friends in mind, Truvelle’s sister labels are made for all of the unique women in our lives that don’t want to settle. I want our company to be known as being approachable and inclusive, so there’s a few plans in the works to round out the Truvelle fam in the coming years and provide more options for more women. In other words, brides-to-be should keep a close watch in 2019.

5) As a designer pro, where do you see bridal fashion going in the next couple of years?

Brides are getting more comfortable with infusing elements from their daily wardrobe style into their wedding day look. We’re seeing everything from hats to statement jackets to coloured dresses and we love it. We’ve always been about the unconventional, so it’s cool to see more brides embracing this and daring to be themselves on their wedding day.

6) What advice can you give to brides who are still searching for their dream dress?

Do your research but don’t over complicate it. If you break a dress down into neckline/waistline/silhouette/fabric when cruising through Pinterest & Insta, you can get a pretty good idea of which elements are important to you before heading into your bridal appointments. Remember to keep an open mind though! Some dresses aren’t the prettiest on the hanger but they’ll blow your mind once you try them on. Stick to your guns and don’t let anyone sway you from the one that gets you excited.
